ABSTRACT

The purpose and scope of this paper is to describe the factors to consider when determining the new solutions and technologies implemented in the shipping industry in the new generation marine propulsion system. Such changes are to promote a green ships concept and change the view of sea transportation to a more ecological and environment-friendly systems. Unfortunately, harnessing the wind, waves and solar power is not always the best solution for the shipping industry - especially in the frequently shadow or cloud-wrapped areas without the adequate winds or waves. In such specific situations, the best solution can be to use the different green shipping technologies such as: hybrid diesel-electric, waste heat recovery system (WHR) or LNG & duel fuel (DF) eco-power plants. In this paper, we are going to concentrate only on the new generation hybrid electric marine propulsion technologies.
