ABSTRACT

Optimal weather route is dependent on the seakeeping performance of a ship, and its performance is highly related to hull form and operating conditions. Seakeeping performance can be modeled using Response Amplitude Operator (RAO) where the linear theory is valid. Seakeeping model test of 8600 TEU container ship was carried out in Changwon National University’s seakeeping basin and its RAOs at various frequencies were used to predict the RMS motion values in irregular waves. Optimal weather route for a special candidate pilot was found using A* algorithm and the relationship between energy consumption and seakeeping performance.
