ABSTRACT

Navigating and operating a ship in modem world needs and utilizes a growing amount of Information and communications technology (ICT). This tools, which are used as decision support systems, need regular updating, same as every IT system. The current paradigms on ships not necessarily supports this need. As such CIRM and others are advocating for an updating regime. This is even more important as the risk of Cyber-attacks on ships and their systems are growing. The IMO is actively looking into Cyber Security, same as organizations like BIMCO or ICS.

The paper will look into the current ICT situation with focus on system updating. It will then try to describe an outlook over the next years. A second focus will be Cyber Security. It will provide a high-level overview on Cyber risks and the need for Cyber security on ships. While touching on aspects like IT security and security procedures, the main focus will be on the need for system updating. In a summary the paper will link the different aspects together and provide a recommendation on the way forward The paper will focus on the following topics:

Current handling on ICT on ships

Ship ICT and system updating

Cyber Risk on ships ICT

System updating as a necessity for Ship ICT and Cyber security
