ABSTRACT

Efficient pavement maintenance management is essential to achieve a good pavement condition under budgets that are more and more constraint. Pavement management systems are computer software that assist this management process. Existing pavement management systems vary greatly in terms of their sophistication. They range from simple ones that implement a handful of decision rules to the more comprehensive ones that explore a large space of alternatives. In this paper, a new integrated approach for implementing pavement maintenance management is defined. The maintenance program is chosen to optimize the efficiency given a maintenance budget, while taking into account a wide range of the manager’s constraints and preferences. A modeling based on the constraint programming paradigm is proposed. Constraint programming is a relatively new paradigm to model and solve combinatorial optimization problems. To our knowledge, it has never been applied to pavement maintenance management. It is particularly well suited for solving this problem and offers many advantages.
