ABSTRACT

The tumor of the follicular infundibulum actually originates from the isthmic part of the hair follicle. However, the inverted follicular keratosis is another benign tumor of follicular origin that directly derives from the follicular infundibulum. Both of these tumors usually present as solitary papules on the head and neck region of elderly patients. They may be indistinguishable on clinical appearance and may also simulate many other skin tumors, such as basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, keratoacanthoma and other adnexal tumors. On dermoscopic examination inverted follicular keratosis is mainly characterized by scales, white structureless areas, hairpin vessels with white halo in radial arrangement and keratin located in the central part of the lesion. Furthermore, we described the dermoscopic appearance of two cases of the tumor of the follicular infundibulum, which had not been previously reported in the literature.
