ABSTRACT

Pilomatrixoma represents the most common benign adnexal tumor and is mainly seen in children as a solitary firm derma-hypodermal nodule on the head and neck area. A dysregulation of the WNT/β-catenin pathway has been found in the majority of pilomatrixoma cases. A wide range of differential diagnoses should be taken into consideration when dealing with pilomatrixoma. On dermoscopic examination pilomatrixoma is commonly characterized by the absence of the common criteria for diagnosis of melanocytic and nonmelanocytic tumors and by irregular whitish structures and streaks, together with some vascular structures such as hairpin and linear-irregular vessels and reddish homogenous areas.
