ABSTRACT

Twenty-first century skills can be developed through good education, including the learning of mathematics in class. One of the recommended mathematics learning approaches is humanistic mathematics learning. In principle, humanistic mathematics learning is a learning approach that aims to treat students as human beings, stating that human beings can learn, can discover things, can solve problems, can work together, and can appreciate the beauty and usefulness of mathematics. Such humanistic learning is not easy to implement. Teachers must really get to know their students, prepare learning materials, and plan learning scenarios in detail. Humanistic learning has the potential to build harmonious teacher–student and student–student relationships. With such relationships, students will be more enthusiastic in the math lesson. Mathematics classrooms in which every student enthusiastically attends lessons give room for teachers to develop students’ curiosity, critical and creative thinking skills, problem-solving skills, collaborative skills, and positive attitudes toward mathematics. These characteristics are a person’s main capital in being open to change, and such willingness is necessary to master the skills needed for the 21st century.
