ABSTRACT

This study was a preliminary study in the development of Android smartphone applications based on a problem-solving approach as a medium for mathematics learning and the development of hard work and curiosity characteristics of tenth grade high school students. The research used a survey-based approach and data was collected through literature review, interviews, observation, and focus group discussion. Subjects for the interviews included ten students and three math teachers in Karawang, Indonesia. Data was analyzed qualitatively. The findings suggested that: (1) the use of Android-based smartphones can support mathematics learning in developing student characteristics of hard work and curiosity; (2) most teachers and students have not utilized Android applications as a learning medium; (3) there is limited application to mathematics learning of Android-based smartphones; (4) a problem-solving approach using integrated media will help students work harder and improve their curiosity. These findings provide a basis for consideration in the development of an Android application as a medium in mathematics learning that also increases curiosity and hard work in tenth grade high school students.
