ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to characterize and to evaluate the emerging growth of data in communications network applied to smart grid scenarios. The use of Big Data helps utilities and operators to increase their profitability by accurately managing their massive amount of generated data. The use of big data enhances the usability of the generated data to make a better prediction, management, and processing. Several fields in a smart grid scenario can improve researchers operation by recognizing data patterns. The concept of Smart Grid deploys the integration of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) together with the electrical system. Mobile technologies are prominent to be applied in smart grid scenarios. Existing technologies must be considered as solutions, decreasing the implementation costs and enabling the application in smart grids. In the operation of future power networks, it is essential to understand the flow of data inside the grid.
