ABSTRACT

Improvement in water reuse efficiency is a key global issue today, as the water sector has very strong linkages with other developmental activities. Wastewater can be utilized as an alternative resource to meet utility water requirements. Industrial demands have driven researchers to develop their own modular or local filtration systems for water treatment and recycling, rather than sending wastewater to a central system. Thus, innovations to increase water treatment efficiency are a key necessity for the near future. Membrane technology can provide a solution in this respect due to advantages like its eco-friendly nature, efficient separation index, ease of operation, compact design and scalable nature. Membrane technologists are currently trying to develop customized membranes for use under specific scenarios, such as membrane modification and appropriate surface treatment that can enhance membrane permeability and selectivity. This article projects membrane technology as a sustainable approach to obtain fresh water from effluents to enable environmental protection.
