ABSTRACT
When a salt cavern is sealed and abandoned, its pressure slowly changes due to various mechanical, hydraulic, thermal and chemical effects. These effects are described in this paper. Several of them can be predicted accurately. It is suggested that an abandonment test be performed before sealing a cavern in order to assess each effect separately, a prerequisite for credible long-term prediction.
