ABSTRACT

The paper presents results of numerical simulations of deviatoric strain probing illustrating the corresponding stress response envelopes. Initially, this is done for an isotropic system starting from an isotropic state of stress. Throughout pre-peak deformation all stress response envelopes are defined by Lade’s criterion. We also present the corresponding fabric response envelopes that manifest themselves as inverted Lade surfaces. Further details are provided for deviatoric strain probing from different non-isotropic stress states. At small strains, the corresponding stress and fabric response envelopes show sensitivity to the memory of the preloading history but this memory is subsequently erased and, as peak strength is approached, the stress and fabric response envelopes are independent of the initial stress state.
