ABSTRACT

The scene and body should be photographed with the highest quality photographic equipment available. Though the ability to use the camera provided with a smart phone or tablet may be convenient, there are a variety of shots that require a more flexible lighting and exposure system. Autopsy photography including methodology and suggested photographs are thoroughly covered in , "Autopsy Protocol and the Investigator's Role." The detail required in the photographic log will differ based upon the camera and capture method. At a minimum, exposure/image number and description of the view are necessary. For print photography on multicolored or brightly colored surfaces, color filters closely matching the background will cause that background to drop out, making the print more readily visible. If strong, natural backlighting conditions exist, the investigator can use a flash aimed in a direction that would eliminate shadows, or he can take the photograph from a different angle.
