ABSTRACT

Documentation through proper death scene videography is an important step in visually preserving the scene; maintaining a record of the spatial relationships between the body, its wounds, and items of evidence; and supporting both notes, sketching, and photography. For an investigator when low light conditions exist or when evidence must be recorded in the shadows, the use of auxiliary lighting is required. The investigator should record the items of evidence and their spatial relationship to the scene and other items of evidence. Though the ability to use the video function provided with a smart phone or tablet may be convenient, there are a variety of shots that require a more flexible lighting, focus, and exposure system. The investigator should always use manual focus: deep focus, macro focus, and shallow focus. Before recording any video, the investigator should set the camcorder to manual focus.
