ABSTRACT

Escherichia coli, commensal eubacteria, is extensively studied for better understanding of genetics, molecular biology and recombinant DNA technology, thus playing a significant role in industrial biotechnology and system biology. The whole genomic evaluation is a comphrensive and high throughput approach in biology because it provides insights into the molecular organization of genome of organisms, their function and the role of gene products they encode. In addition to this, it also allows microbiologists to study evolution, diversity and pathogenesis of microbes. Here we describe and annotate the genome sequences of 4 Escherichia coli strains K-12 MG1655, O157: H7 strains EDL933 and Sakai and O6: K2: H1 strain CFT073. We also summarize gene products of E. coli along with their functions in the cell and discuss the techniques for analysis of E. coli proteome.
