ABSTRACT

Vitiligo is an ancient malady, characterized by circumscribed achromic macules and patches causing severe psychosocial impact on quality of life. The etiopathogenesis of melanocyte loss is now better understood. Apart from medical therapies, surgical therapies have also been extensively used in repigmentation of vitiligo.

Repigmentation occurs mainly by the melanocytic reservoir of hair follicles, unaffected melanocytes within the lesion and those at the periphery. These cells are stimulated by various growth factors and cytokines produced locally in response to various stimuli. Though repigmentation in vitiligo is a complex process, the insight of knowledge will usher an era of new therapeutic modalities in management of vitiligo.
