ABSTRACT

Vitiligo is an acquired chronic pigmentation disorder characterized by white patches, which usually increase in size over time, corresponding to a substantial loss of functional epidermal and sometimes hair follicle melanocytes. Hypomelanoses of the skin encompass a wide spectrum of congenital and acquired alterations in melanin pigmentation. In this chapter, we discuss hypomelanotic or depigmentary disorders that may be confused with vitiligo along with a brief discussion of the noninvasive and invasive tests that help in the diagnosis of vitiligo.
