ABSTRACT

Vitiligo is an acquired depigmenting disorder which is characterized by loss of epidermal melanocytes because of multifactorial and overlapping pathogenetic mechanisms. The etiology of vitiligo is still not clear, although many mechanisms have been implicated. The imbalance between the oxidant and antioxidant systems may play a role in the pathogenesis of vitiligo. It has also been observed that supplementing vitiligo treatment with antioxidants results in increased treatment efficacy. In this section, the relationship between vitiligo and the oxidant−antioxidant system is described in detail.
