ABSTRACT

Depigmenting agents in vitiligo have a role in extensive disease wherein repigmenting treatments are difficult to administer. The cytotoxic potential of various chemicals, lasers, cryogen, allergens, vaccines, etc. is used to depigment normal skin in vitiligo patients. In this chapter, we discuss various established and potential depigmentation agents and various emerging therapies. An ideal depigmenting agent should have a potent, rapid, and selective effect on melanocytes, should lead to permanent removal of pigment, and should be nontoxic with minimal side effects. Although an ideal agent for depigmentation is currently not available, this chapter highlights the various depigmenting agents in use.
