ABSTRACT

The importance of diet in skin disorders has often been a subject of debate among dermatologists. Patients are often anxious about what foods to consume and what to avoid. No matter how impractical it may be, patients believe that following a certain diet will cure their disease. Though the literature support for dietary modifications may be controversial in our system of medicine, knowing and explaining the relatively beneficial or harmful dietary products helps build the patient's confidence, especially in the Indian population where diet is believed to be a cure for many diseases. There is an uncertain relationship of diet in vitiligo. In fact, vitiligo has been classified under “Miscellaneous disorders with an uncertain relationship to diet.” There are minimal reports in the published literature of dietary interventions for vitiligo as a treatment modality. This chapter focuses on the role of diet in vitiligo based on the limited literature available.
