ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to investigate Drug Therapy Problems (DTPs) in pediatric and geriatric patients at Farmasi Airlangga Pharmacy in Surabaya, Indonesia. This was a cross-sectional study, in which data were collected from interviews with patients or their families. DTPs in patients who obtained prescription medicine at the pharmacy in February 2013 were identified. The results indicated that 57 pediatric patients and 59 geriatric patients presented 63 and 61 prescriptions, respectively. Of these, 49 (77.80%) pediatric patients and 44 (72.1%) geriatric patients experienced DTPs, whereas 26 (41.2%) pediatric patients and 20 (31.2%) geriatric patients experienced more than one DTP, respectively. The DTPs identified in pediatric and geriatric patients included needs for additional drug therapy in seven and five patients, Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) in 10 and 22 patients, and non-compliance in 36 and 39 patients, respectively. Too high and low dosages were found in 2 and 26 pediatric patients, respectively. In conclusion, DTPs in the community pharmacy were quite high.
