ABSTRACT

This study aimed to reveal factors influencing the appropriate measurement of oral liquid medications and the correct choice of dosing devices. A combination of survey and observation methods was utilized. Participants were people who bought liquid oral medicines in three community pharmacies in Surabaya City. There were 168 participants; 80 people in group 1 and 88 in group 2, based on counseling received. Intervention significantly influenced the appropriateness of dose measured (P = 0.000). The ability in measuring medication correctly and the availability of a measuring tool included in the medicine’s package statistically significantly influenced plan of future behavior in choosing correct dosing device (both had P = 0.000). It was important to ensure the consumer ability to measure medicine correctly by giving proper counseling. Furthermore, there is urgent need to assure the availability of a measuring tool attached with the liquid medicines in order to guarantee the correct dose of medication prepared to administer.
