ABSTRACT

In vivo reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) is a valuable tool for observing skin morphology in vivo. Several morphological features can be identified by RCM and compared in different body sites: the brightness of the stratum corneum; the orientation and size of superficial furrows; the thickness of different skin layers; the diameter of different cells; the pigmentation of basal keratinocytes; the presence, shape, and size of dermal papillae; the quantity and size of hair follicles; and the quality of dermal collagen.
