ABSTRACT

Physician competence is an essential component in the provision of optimal healthcare. Physicians must have the appropriate training, fund of knowledge, clinical decision-making and technical skills to deliver their services in a competent, caring manner and to attain optimal patient outcomes. Admission to an interventional cardiology training fellowship program requires completing an accredited fellowship in general cardiology, including all the core competencies associated with such training. Interventional cardiology is a sub-specialty training program, allowing candidates who complete the program to achieve level 3 certification and to qualify for the interventional cardiology board examination sponsored by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) and the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). According to the American Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements, there must be a sufficient number of 'key' clinical faculty with documented qualifications to supervise the interventional cardiology fellows.
