ABSTRACT

The term “respiratory virus” typically refers to viruses that present with symptoms and signs that are predominantly respiratory in nature. There are, however, more than 200 viruses that are known to cause infections of the respiratory tract, many of which are better known for their systemic manifestations (Table 32.1). Coinfection with two or more viral pathogens is relatively common, occurring in up to 30% of cases in young children1 and 14% in adults.2
