ABSTRACT

A wide range of diseases can manifest pathology in both the lungs and kidneys (see Table 55.1). The clinical presentations may form part of a wider constitutional disorder or may be relatively tissue specific, for example, due to the presence of common antigens expressed at both sites. Significant disturbance in the function of either the kidneys or lungs inevitably has effects on the other organ due to their roles in acid-base metabolism, oxygenation, and fluid volume regulation.
