ABSTRACT

Breast-conserving surgery (BCS) often provides this option for women. Historically, it was thought that mastectomy (MX) was superior to breast conservation surgery. Oncoplastic breast surgery should be considered in all patients with a breast cancer diagnosis where it may be technically feasible. The highest priority in BCS is to ensure that there is no compromise in oncological principles. For some patients, neo-adjuvant treatment may make the option of BCS still possible, reducing the number of patients requiring a MX. Ensuring oncological safety is the primary aim of any breast-conserving surgery, but the other important aspect is to maintain an acceptable breast aesthetic. Radiotherapy is one of the most important determining factors for local recurrence.
