ABSTRACT

Several new food loss assessment methods have been developed and launched by international agencies and global NGOs in recent years. These include the World Resources Institute (WRI) Global Food Loss and Waste Protocol; the UN Global Initiative on Food Loss and Waste Reduction (also known as SAVE FOOD) field case studies methodology (also known as the 4 – S Approach); the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) Technical platform on measurement and reduction of food loss and waste (which focuses on potential food loss and waste or PFLW); and an updated Commodity Systems Assessment Methodology (CSAM, led by IICA, the Inter‑American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture). This chapter will introduce these food loss assessment methodologies and provide some background information on their history, development, differing objectives, and an analysis of their strengths and weaknesses.
