ABSTRACT

Objective measurement of results is central to evaluating the efficacy of projects and programs designed with the intent to improve postharvest handling practices. The stronger and more detailed the data gathered the more compelling the argument for adopting new practices. There are many methods of measuring and evaluating the outcomes of projects designed to reduce food loss. This chapter provides an overview of some monitoring and evaluation (M&E) practices intended for planning and implementing projects focused on postharvest food loss reduction. Examples of measurable objectives, indicators and data collection methods are provided, along with examples of cost/benefit analysis for improved postharvest technologies and return on investment. The chapter concludes with an example of a postharvest project evaluation, training aids and sample worksheets, illustrations and workshop presentations.
