ABSTRACT

Transition of urban structures requires a careful reflection about the role of time in the description of urban phenomena. If the mutations, albeit quick, appear much more under control in Europe, in other parts of the world the situation is visibly different. Therefore, this research describes the changes in the concept of public and urban space in the Indian context, particularly in the city of Ahmedabad, Gujarat. This constitutes a particularly interesting case because it shows the signs of a change of scale and of use of the space itself that cannot be ignored, besides it reveals the relations between times and places that assume different quality and characters during a single day. The research aims to explain the changes and mutations arising in a wide range of Indian public spaces that become case studies useful to describe and compare the definition of public space in that context.
