ABSTRACT

The sustainability issue is today of crucial importance when thinking and managing architecture and the environment. Building rehabilitation is a sustainable practice, especially when it comes to the rehabilitation of heritage buildings. Design is essential through the use of life cycle thinking, maximizing resource efficiency. Wherever possible, green roofs will be used so as to avoid introducing new types of finishes, at the same time it increases the thermal insulation and reduces the problem of disposing of rainwater. It will be made a management of the existing resources from rainwater, as gutters, downspouts, gargoyles and tanks, as well as the topography of the place and vegetation that contribute to the sustainability of the historic property. The Landscape Architecture will reinforce the sustainability of the historic place. We have selected as case studies the Rehabilitation of Portalegre Cathedral and the Faculty of Law, UL.
