ABSTRACT

Chinese government provides affordable housing in the cities to help cope with the housing shortage for rural-to-urban migrants. But there is limited research on these residents’ needs and preferences. This study examined the space usage in affordable housing for migrants, and provided corresponding design recommendations for improvement. A post occupancy evaluation was conducted using mixed methods including design analysis, surveys (N = 0), and semi-structured interviews (N = 9). Findings revealed three main problems, including: (a) space being too cramped (mean usable floor area = 37.20 m2) for the household size (mean = 3); (b) storage space being insufficient; (c) space arrangement not accommodating multifunctional usage. Based on these findings, potential design strategies were proposed to improve space arrangement and quality of life in affordable housing.
