ABSTRACT

Cities and neighbourhoods are affected by demographic change in many ways. In order to make a successful ageing in place possible, it is necessary to adapt not only flats but also neighbourhoods to the demands of an ageing society. In this context the single-family house, one of the most common building types in Northwestern Switzerland, plays a special role. On the basis of a cross-evaluation of strategies, practical examples and research studies, planning measures for the adaptation of neighbourhoods to the demands of an ageing society were developed and applied to contrasting case examples in the context of test plans. It turns out that neighbourhoods with single-family houses show different potentials for a successful ageing in place. The central criterion seems to be the proximity to a centre or the connection to public transport. While mobile shops and delivery services could contribute to a successful ageing in place in peripheral areas, densification offers a variety of options in central locations.
