ABSTRACT

Nowadays, ‘Grey Infrastructures’ are in contrast with an increasing demand for eco-friendly and sustainable cities. They have become an ineluctable component of the urban ecosystem, witnessing the divergence between the natural and artificial components of the city. They are undergoing a critical reflection about their environmental compatibility, as well as their aesthetic and functional configuration; for this reason, they could be rethought through a smart use of ‘eco-tech-green’ solutions. This approach is a precondition for a new environmental planning of contemporary towns, allowing their transformation into “multitasking ecosystems”, creating a new aesthetic of camouflage. Greenery is also an opportunity to re-naturalize the city, because of the evident benefits that vegetation entails with regard to the environmental issues. This research aims at showing the existence of different design approaches to the urban infrastructures and suggesting the possibility to identify new techniques to re-naturalize these artifacts through the use of camouflage techniques.
