ABSTRACT

Yam bean has originated in tropical America. Archaeological evidence reveals that this crop was grown by the early civilizations of Mexico and Central America, such as the Aztecs and the Mayas. Yam bean is a rich source of carbohydrates, which are present in the form of sugar, starch and dietary fibre. Yam bean tubers are very much similar to potato in taste as well as in ways of eating. The health benefits of yam bean are attributed to its strong supply of dietary fibre, vitamin C and other minerals. Yam bean being a crop of tropical and subtropical regions needs warm and dry climate for its growth and development. A variety developed at Rajendra Agricultural University, Dholi (Bihar) in 1999 through a seedling selection from germplasm is recommended for cultivation in North Bihar and West Bengal region. In tropical areas, planting can be done throughout the year. Yam bean is commercially propagated by seeds.
