ABSTRACT

Aircraft and aircraft systems that operate in the National Airspace System are required to be airworthy, defined as being built to an approved design and in a safe condition for flight. This chapter focuses on the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations, guidance, and policies for human factors considerations in the certification of approved designs for aircraft flight decks in new or modified aircraft and aircraft systems. The human factors regulatory requirements that must be met are mandated by law under the Federal Aviation Regulations, which encompass objective criteria and subjective criteria. The certification of aircraft systems requires compliance with technical and operational performance standards as referenced in FAA Advisory Circulars and Technical Standard Orders. The chapter describes the human factors–related regulations and other requirements and may include a compliance checklist matrix with specific references to the detailed subparagraphs that will covered by the Human Factors Certification Plan.
