ABSTRACT

This chapter presents ten pearls of wisdom for general practitioners (GPs) for better understanding of paediatrics and for more efficient use of resources. These pearls have been acquired from years of experience and evidence-based study by specialists in the field. Breastfed infants are often referred for a paediatric opinion because of faltering growth. Typically, these infants are 'feeding all the time' but demonstrate static growth. The chapter also presents advice on diagnoses often overlooked by GPs while handling infants. Diagnoses of the following symptoms are recommended: teething, breath holding, growing pains, tongue-tie (ankyloglossia), infantile dyschezia, and 'kinematic imbalances due to sub-occipital strain' (KISS) syndrome. The chapter also presents guidance on how to distinguish tricky differentials and finally a few tips on prescribing medications for these patients.
