ABSTRACT

This chapter presents ten pearls of wisdom for general practitioners (GPs) for better understanding of general practice and for more efficient use of resources. These pearls have been acquired from years of experience and evidence-based study by specialists in the field. The chapter also presents idiosyncratic list comprising diagnoses occasionally see in general practice. The list comprises migrainous vertigo, carbon monoxide poisoning, inhaled foreign body, keratosis pilaris, burning legs syndrome, burning mouth syndrome, chondrodermatitis, proctalgia fugax, levator ani syndrome, balanitis xerotica obliterans, orgasm headache, tietze's disease, myokymia, and middle ear myoclonus. The chapter provides guidance on how to distinguish tricky differentials and finally a few tips on prescribing medications for these patients. Patients may claim perfect concordance with, say, their asthma or antihypertensive medication, but their script issue history may tell a very different story.
