ABSTRACT

This chapter offers a method to improve binding strength between the matrix and reinforcing particles, based on the use of nanomaterials for matrix forming. The research has been carried out in development of metal-matrix composites with aluminum and copper matrices and reinforcing particles of silicon carbide. The interface between aluminum melt and silicon carbide particles plated by aluminum nano-particles was investigated with the help of scanning electron microscope. In order to obtain more detailed information about interface surface between aluminum nano-particles and silicon carbide particles, the research was conducted by means of a transmission electron microscope. The shapes of aluminum nano-particles as well as the value of wetting angle speak about high wettability between aluminum and silicon carbide in the case of application of nano-size aluminum powder. The conducted material processing results in the occurrence of defects in silicon carbide nano-particles.
