ABSTRACT

We live in a time when Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the more prevalent topics in the scientific, technological, and even pop culture zeitgeist. Apple's Siri, Google Assistant, and Amazon's Alexa are leading the charge in the mainstreaming of these AI-driven technologies within everyday life, and although this might seem like a modern contrivance, the desire for this type of automation is in truth much, much older. The word "android" first appears long before that, in Ephraim Chambers' Cyclopaedia, one of the first encyclopedias produced, originally published in 1728; but besides these specific terms, to find the first reference to the overall concept of AI, one must look even further backward. As much as people might mentally trivialize it, game AI has in many cases been tackling some of the current questions—albeit from a different angle—for quite some time, as evidenced by this list.
