ABSTRACT

This chapter includes the description and discussion of movement patterns and habitat use of pike in lentic, lotic and coastal brackish areas and, in some populations, between these distinct habitats. It divides into three main sections. The chapter deals with rates of movement reflecting activity levels and swimming speeds, how this varies temporally and is affected by biotic, abiotic and anthropogenic influences. It considers home range and site fidelity. It deals solely with the spatial ecology of young pike and larvae. The chapter reviews a large number of studies that have generated a range of frequently conflicting conclusions on patterns in the spatial ecology of pike. It describes the habitat use by pike, i.e., which habitats are used and when. The chapter considers migration patterns related to spawning. It explores potential biotic and abiotic factors that could influence the movements between habitats.
