ABSTRACT

Full recovery from a concussion or mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) necessitates active monitoring of athletes and patients as they gradually return to their student lives. Reintegration into the scholastic environment should be done using a dedicated plan that emphasizes the unique needs of students with concussions and is facilitated by school personnel. It is important that adjustments and accommodations are made for students who are returning from a concussion and that communication is emphasized between members of the school, health care team, the student, and their family. This chapter provides a framework for the standardization of the return to school process that provides a pathway for students to follow as they gradually return to their studies. The contents of this chapter outline suggested partners in the return to school process, a pathway for managing the return of students to the school environment, and important considerations for students and their scholastic representatives in the return to school process. A case report is provided at the conclusion of this chapter to illustrate the use of a proposed return to school pathway.
