ABSTRACT

Physiotherapists have training in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of a variety of health conditions that result in a range of alterations in physical function. Physiotherapists are often regarded as movement specialists and are core members of multidisciplinary care teams. They have a skill set that allows them to play an important role in promoting recovery following concussion due to their expertise in a variety of rehabilitative techniques. The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview of the role of the physiotherapist working with the concussion population. Covered topics include the specific management of dizziness, oculomotor, visual, cervical impairments, as well as pain or headaches. It also introduces the role of the physiotherapist in progressing individuals with concussion through their return to activity with the help of exercise-based therapy. As professionals with the ability to act in primary care directly on the field, as well as to provide specialized approaches to management in all phases of recovery, physiotherapists are essential members of the concussion care team. A case study is presented to complement the discussion.
