ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a wider market definition and the drivers of the global halal market economy while sharing an overview of the core seven halal market economy sectors: halal food, Islamic finance, Muslim travel, modest fashion, media/recreation, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. This wider perspective provides a context for understanding the drivers and opportunities in the halal food space. The extent of the halal process’ impact within the value chain varies industry by industry. It is also important to identify key players across different steps of the value chain to better unlock opportunities and understand industry needs. The core of the halal market requirements relates to meat products’ requirements for Islamic-law-based animal slaughtering. There is a wide diversity in awareness and adoption of the halal concept within the core customer base of Muslims globally. A key relevance of the wider halal ecosystem to the food sector is the fact that they all share the same core target audiences.
