ABSTRACT

With the enormous investment made in civil, mechanical, and aerospace engineering during the twentieth century, designs were pushed to the limits of their performance capacity, in terms of operation speed, ability to operate in adverse environments weight, etc. Functioning in an unpredictable, highly uncertain environment, there are has more problems with regard to dynamics, vibrations and impacts, which have become essential topics for assuring structural integrity and operational functionality in different engineering areas. However, practical problems regarding dynamics, vibrations and impacts have often failed despite large investments. This chapter provides an overview of the essentials of dynamics and vibrations. It covers topics from basic theoretical implications to advanced solution strategies of dynamics, from relevant engineering challenges to the solutions, from engineering failures due to inappropriate accounting of dynamics to mitigation measures and utilization of dynamics.
