ABSTRACT

The analysis of nonlinear structural responses is a key task. This chapter presents procedures for the nonlinear structural response analysis together with the definition of loads in hydrocarbon explosions. The uncertainties in blast load profile idealization affecting the nonlinear structural responses are addressed. Modelling of strain rate effects on material properties due to explosions is discussed in terms of yield stress and fracture strain. Applied examples to topside structures of a VLCC (very large crude oil carrier) class floating production storage offloading unit to develop offshore oil and gas in deep waters are presented, where a comparison is made with the results of industry practices which use simplified methodologies. It is obvious from the comparison that more refined methodologies should be applied for the nonlinear structural response analysis. Recommendations for further studies are presented.
