ABSTRACT

Arising from fibroblasts and considered to be within the spectrum of solitary fibrous tumors of the dura, hemangiopericytoma (HPC) may appear as true HPC; solitary fibrous tumors, and non-HPC tumor. The meninges are the coverings of the brain composed of three layers of connective tissue membranes. The dura mater is the outer layer, the arachnoid mater the middle layer, and the pia mater the inner layer. The relatively large size and frequent supratentorial location of central nervous system (CNS)/menigeal HPC produce a mass effect, leading to headache, vomiting, seizures, and focal neurological dysfunction. CNS/meningeal HPC is a solitary, lobulated mass usually present in a supratentorial location. The tumor is highly vascular and has a tendency to erode adjacent bone. CNS hemangioblastoma is a solid or cystic tumor of simple cystic, macrocystic, or microcystic form. Gross total resection and adjuvant radiotherapy are recommended treatments for CNS HPC.
