ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the behavioral management implications of the collaborative research projects that are ongoing at the National Center for Chimpanzee Care (NCCC) of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Bastrop, Texas. It discusses the relationships between collaborative research and behavioral management. The chapter emphasizes behavioral research projects focused on chimpanzees, the same benefits of collaborative research would accrue for other genera of Nonhuman primates (NHPs) and other types of research projects. It describes some of the techniques and findings and emphasizing the aspects of the work that are most applicable to behavioral management. Collaborative research projects can effectively contribute to successful captive management strategies, serving as effective components of a comprehensive behavioral management program. In addition to generating data for critical investigations, collaborative projects provide the animals with important cognitive and social stimulation that functionally simulates natural conditions, is enriching, and may otherwise be missing from even an enhanced captive environment.
