ABSTRACT

The Behavioral Management Consortium (BMC) was established and held its inaugural meeting in April of 2007. It has three main goals: to build evidence-based consensus on behavioral management, enrichment, and the promotion of psychological wellbeing; to develop plans for scientific collaborations and resource sharing; and to serve as a resource for behavioral management best practices and recommendations for primate facilities outside of the consortium. A significant focus of the BMC has been to establish common procedures and tools to facilitate cross-facility communication and collaboration. This chapter outlines seven of the common tools developed by the BMC: common definition of a successful pair or small-group introduction; documentation of the introduction of pairs or small groups of caged nonhuman primates (NHPs); factors leading to the use of single housing; abnormal behavior ethogram; self-injurious behavior scale; alopecia scoring scale; and NHP transfer form.
