ABSTRACT

Trichothecene mycotoxins are highly irritating to the skin and mucous membranes. This activity may be responsible for the cutaneous and oral inflammatory lesions observed in fusariotoxicosis of chickens, 1 stachybotryotoxicosis, 2,3 and alimentary toxic aleukia (ATA). 4 Long before trichothecenes were incriminated in the diseases above, “stachybotryotoxin” 5,6 and “poaefusarin” 4 were recognized as irritant extracts of toxic food.
